When I started on Patreon, it seemed like a great way to do specialized releases of fiction for my small but unusually tasteful audience. It was pretty good, for while! But I just don’t want to be tied to them any more, for several reasons.
- I can do it myself now.
- Their interest in promoting any individual creator seems pretty negligible. (I might feel differently if I was already huge, but I have no idea.)
- The big one: I have no idea what Patreon is going to do from month to month.
Is Patreon going to dive into crypto? I don’t think so, but I can’t be sure. Is their next move an opt-out for LLM training on every post I make? Maybe! All of which is part of a more general feeling that Patreon is a company that tolerates creativity to make tech profitable. I no longer feel like ‘enabling creation’ is still first and foremost with them.
So, as a response, I made www.gregstolze.com an ecommerce site. It was time.
If you want to get a short story (or, possibly, novella) every month from me, click on that button on the very front page. I promise, it’s going to be the easiest and least stressful for both of us.
In the meantime, just today you’ve got access to three different stories on here!
Recreational Telepathy is what it sounds like: A story where two minds can be as one, for the purposes of fun dating and finding a life partner. About 20% of the time it’s a perfect match! Other matches are nightmarish episodes of unprecedented psychic distress, but we don’t talk about those. We really prefer to stress the soulmate potential!
Medusa’s Weekend is, honestly, just as much fun as I’ve had writing in a long while. Medusa, the gorgon, terror of Sarpedon, is living her best life in New York City, disguised, hydrated, in her lane and working as a sculptress when an old boyfriend cruises into town. Sadly, he’s there for more than just a good time.
Three Days of the Gorgon is the sequel (though you don’t need to read Medusa’s Weekend first, I guess). In it, our long-suffering immortal snake-haired heroine deals with assassins, espionage, and the world’s oldest cicada.
